I asked about change and moral cowardice before and many talked about the dollar cost of today’s solar power and how sometimes the wind doesn’t blow or blows too hard. Can people in general ever see beyond their shadow to the possibilities out there if they decide to go get them.
Meathead……and others, time is running out. Imagine your lifestyle with 80% less food and water or weather that can kill you, 3 times a week. This is something that needs some urgency. It will not be a convenient change that must be made, it will be a game changer.
We start now. Every issue/problem is an opportunity for scientific, social, and economic gain. We do have to choose to start down this road though.
robertC Thanks , I will read, I strive to learn daily.
What Frank C said. Believe in the future and work hard to better that future.
You have a friend on your side. It is called the free market. These ways of generating power are slowly making their way in to the grid all around the country. It is growing and welcomed. Time is on your side.
Unfortunately no.
They take a sound bite they heard somewhere and repeat it over and over.
The price of solar is going down and the efficiency is increasing.
Work toward the future.
We have the momentum.
The key to the answer is in your question; ‘more economical’. Most people welcome ‘green’ technology, and indeed, many who oppose the government forcing it actually apply aspects of it that are economically sound. For instance, while Al Gore bloviates about ‘green power’, the current president, George Bush, actually has a geothermal heating and cooling system on his ranch as well as one that recycles rain water. I have participated in the industrial movement in this direction, as recycling programs create a competitive edge now that the market exists for them and the infrastructure to support the effort is present, and it is more than just cardboard and paper, but fluids products, etc. as well.
What happens when the sun, which fuels solar energy and creates winds, explodes in a fiery armageddon there smart guy, then how am I going to play my Blu-Rays huh? Can you answer that?
these technologies are still in their infancy T boone pickins is pimpin the wind so you know serious cash involved but at your age fallin for the old global warming sham the sky is fallin thing is so passe did you stock up on bottled water during the Y2K scare is it one of those young Obamarama honeys that got your ol head spinnin grandpa?P.S hey just plain jim hows those elections going in China?
I,m 70 years old and do not care. Mexico is nice this time of year. and you can Bar-B-Que down there !
So the way you phrase your question, I am to bow before someone else who will decide what is best for me.
I am to slave part of my life to pay for someone else’s idea that I may or may not agree with. Do I not do this already with 63% of my earnings, (not counting all the hidden taxes), going to one form of taxation or another?
Yet you make a blind statement that I am against all new energy technologies because I do not favor government support.
Again you are incorrect. I do favor sensible technologies as long as I am free to decide what is best for me!
A little reading for you;
"Do Solar/wind power critics understand that these are evolving technologies getting more economical every day?"
No they are not. Solar power has been around for decades. Wind power has been around for hundreds of years. And yet neither can, has, or will take the place of coal, oil, natural gas, which are much cheaper and can do things for us that solar and wind cannot do.
i think coal and nuclear energy people have an interest in criticizing these technologies. however, current technological limitations mean wind/solar are not so dependable, solar panels are not so efficient and is reliant on good weather conditions. wind energy is more matured as a viable energy source.the main problem with wind is transmission, as they are built far away from populated areas. they are also a hazard for migrating birds etc etc.
so, before using these technologies in mass quantities, some technical challenges are yet to be overcome.
People do seem to have a habit of looking at the here and now not looking beyond that.
Like the Neocons saying something to the affect of a 1,000 year Reich.
8 years later they are scorned.
Moral of the story, nothing stays the same, everything changes. That includes technology. If that wasn’t the case we’d be still spinning records and not stealing music and video’s off the internet for our mp3′s and 4′s.
Peace
Jim
.
Solar technology has been around since the 70′s and it’s not much more efficient than it was then. Not nearly enough to make any kind of economical sense.
Wind power has it’s own problems to work out. Have you even done any REAL research into wind power? It has large drawbacks.
I’m not saying it will never be feasible, but at the rate it’s going, it’ll take another 5 to 6 generations, at least.
So according to you, we do what in the mean time?
I don’t see anyone is against alternative energy. Just don’t force the choice on me by a added tax on my current lifestyle. Today it would cost over 30 to 40 thousand dollars to install one solar or wind power unit to power their home. That is compared to about 12 hundred dollars a year to continue the way they are. So the payback is about 30 years. That is a bad investment in my eyes. If it is such a good idea , why does it have to be funded through Government ? Let science and the Competition bring down the cost. It is now just a funding method to take money from the US consumers.
